Bruce Lukaszewicz (BELphotos) > Lifeguard II Michael Cranston

The Ocean Beach area was very busy on Memorial Day, May 30, 2005. It was early in the day and lifeguards had already made several rescues due to high waves and strong rip currents.

As the rip current started pulling very strongly in the late morning, several victims were taken out to sea. Lifeguard Cranston arrived on scene and immediately entered the water.
Although he observed at least seven victims in various states of distress, the victims furthest outside were of the greatest concern. The Sergeant working the main tower realized the immediate need for help, and responded by putting all available guards in the water.

Lifeguard Cranston swam toward the victims with a rescue buoy and fins. As he reached four victims in the inside zone, he observed three more victims on the outside needing more immediate assistance. He directed the four inside victims to the north towards a sandbar, and advised them another lifeguard was on the way. Lifeguard Cranston then made contact with two of the victims on the outside; a boy and a girl, approximately nine years old. They had grasped each other around the shoulders attempting to keep afloat. Lifeguard Cranston gave the two children his rescue buoy and told them he would be back. As they pleaded for him to stay, he observed the third outside victim, approximately eight years old, coming up for a final gasp of air and submerging again.

Lifeguard Cranston could no longer see the submerged victim. As he approached the area, he did a surface dive and swam into the victim. The eight year old boy grabbed Lifeguard Cranston around the neck and clung onto him. Lifeguard Cranston swam with the boy to the other two victims he had previously contacted. Another lifeguard arrived on scene and took these two victims in on a rescue board. Lifeguard Cranston swam into the beach with the young boy still clinging to his neck the entire time. Lifeguard Cranston, with the assistance of another lifeguard, checked the boy for any signs of water aspiration; his symptoms proved negative and they turned the boy over to his parents.

Lifeguard Cranston’s rescue was truly extraordinary. He grasped the young boy from the jaws of death. He demonstrated excellent physical conditioning and quick thinking by leaving the rescue buoy with the two other victims. With a little luck and a large dose of experience, he was able to dive into the right spot to locate this small child. Mike was a true hero this day. (Source San Diego Fire-Rescue PIO)
